In Memoriam:
Friend of Social
Studies Mike Adkins
On August 7, 2009,
the state of Oklahoma's educators and students lost a most special and
dedicated Friend of Social Studies,
Mr. Mike Adkins of Moore, Oklahoma.
We remember and celebrate the life of Mike Adkins as both a supportive
peer and role model. Through his professional career, Mike served as a
teacher of state and American history, recognized as our state
Oklahoma Teacher of the Year before beginning a new chapter in his
professional growth as the Director of Education for the Oklahoma
State Museum of History, where his love of history and enthusiasm for
bringing history to life for Oklahoma's children influenced the
quality of social studies education for decades to come.
We can offer
no better tribute to Mike Adkins than the words of Theodore Roosevelt:
"...The credit
belongs to the man who is actually in the arena,
whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood,
who strives valiantly...who spends himself for a worthy cause;
who knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement"

In memory of Mike Adkins, the
Oklahoma Council of the Social Studies' Annual
"Friend of Social Studies
Award" has been renamed in
his honor.
This year's first recipient of this recognition is Mr. Kelly Curtright,
our State Director of Social Studies, whose leadership and dedication
to social studies in Oklahoma is deeply appreciated.
Ms. June Adkins, pictured below with current OCSS President Matt
Holtzen, was present at the OCSS 2009 Awards Ceremony to help
recognize Mr. Curtright's contributions.
